History of Volvo Trucks


Volvo trucks is a global truck manufacturing company, it is among the world’s top largest heavy duty trucks manufacturers. This company has a long history; it was started in the late 20s and continues to operate till today. It has been in operation for almost a century. The history of Volvo is also exciting, especially because Volvo has had a huge impact in the worldwide transportation market. As the worldwide transportation system continues to grow, the Volvo Company also grows significantly.

First Automobile

In 1927, the first series of Volvo car was manufactured, it was officially driven by Sales Manager Hilmer Johansson as he matched through the factory gates. This marked an event where the company Volvo was officially born. In 1928, the LV series 1 Volvo truck was made available in the market. Even though it was a very simple truck, it was able to sell over 500 units in the summer period.

Horse draw wagons

It is important to note that the first trucks made in the 20s were different from what we have today. They were less sophisticated and were simply regarded as complements to horse-drawn wagons and were a better means of transportation compared to sea and railway transportation. From this simple start, Volvo has developed over the years to become among the world’s largest manufacturer of trucks, buses and Volvo truck parts construction equipment.

Bus and aircraft manufacture

In the early 50s, Volvo group got a new focus into aircraft and bus manufacture. In 1951, they were able to introduce their first mid-engine bus, the B65. This was a durable bus, the last model of these buses were manufactured in 1964.

Similarly, in this period, Volvo introduced diesel driven aircraft models. These aircrafts were quite popular since they had a powerful engine rating of 40-50 hp. The first of these aircrafts took off 1952, they came with an RM5 engine and were named Lansen aircraft.

Volvo from 50s to 80s

After introducing buses and aircraft, Volvo continued to manufacture other automobiles that created a huge interest. In 1959, Volvo managed to produce the Volvo Viking, Volvo Starke and Volvo Titan vehicles. Later in the early 70s, it managed to place about eight F86 new vehicles and models for text. After this test the F86 was launched in the United States. From the 50s to the 80s, Volvo’s history is marked by the introduction of several Volvo truck parts, vehicle brands and models.

Purchase of the White

The next major event on the Volvo Company was in 1981. This was when Volvo purchased a certain percentage of the White Motor Corporation. They changed the name to Volvo White Truck Corporation. Volvo white was able to sell vehicles and Volvo truck parts under the Volvo Company name.

Some of the assets and Volvo parts that Volvo acquired from the white included the White Western Star manufacturing program. This consisted of a conventional truck known as Road Boss, a cab-over engine truck named the Road Commander 2, a heavy duty construction car named the Autocar DC and a long distance cab-over engine truck named the Western Star.

Getting into the American Market

Purchasing of the White was a really good move for the Volvo Company as a whole. Volvo trucks parts were then marketed over a wide area in the United States. Apart from the white, a parallel program of the heavy-duty trucks enabled it to get into the American market.

Acquisition of GM

Acquisition of General Motors was another big move that the company made. This was done in 1986 by Volvo announcing the purchase of GM Heavy Truck Corporation. This company had a large customer base making it a very good deal in for Volvo. They also had a wide dealer network within the USA and a strong presence in the Canadian market. This created a new Volvo company branch that was name Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation.

Similarly, within this same year, Volvo was able to win the Truck of The Year’ award. Volvo was the first truck to be able to win this title for the third time. Its product the FL range, made it win the title for the third time.

Volvo in the 90s

This decade started on a high note, Volvo announced that it had entered a new alliance with France Automotive Manufacture to manufacture common Volvo automobile and Volvo truck parts. This news was received with much enthusiasm but was later realized to be a wrong step by the company.

In mid 90s, the Volvo GM trucks were first marketed under the name Volvo parts and Volvo automobile. In 1997, Volvo was able to purchase the whole of General Motors and it changed its name from Volvo GM to Volvo Trucks North America.

Volvo in the early 21st century

At the start of the twenty first century, Volvo had acquired a huge market and continued to increase this through introduction of several vehicle brand and models. Similarly, it acquired more companies to increase its manufacturing scope. Some of the products introduced during this time include Volvo VHD, the D16 Engine Volvo parts, Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology and the new Volvo VN. Volvo also centered on reducing environmental pollution by introducing new Volvo D series engine parts that had lesser emissions.

Volvo Group Reorganization

The latest reorganization that Volvo group has had was in 2012. Through this process, Volvo Trucks stopped being a separate company, it was rather incorporated with the Volvo Group Trucks and with other Volvo truck brands. Similarly, in this year, Volvo renewed their truck range so as to comply with the European Union environmental requirements for engines.
Volvo Today

When Volvo parts and products were first introduced early in the 20s, the trucks sold were less sophisticated and were a simple replacement of the existing means of transportation. However, Volvo has evolved significantly and is today a major brand for transporting goods. Volvo has also taken a new approach in correct manufacturing of vehicles to a more safe environmental approach. Its manufacturing companies and vehicle parts are being continuously improved to a friendlier environmental impact. Today, Volvo is sold and exported in over 2000 dealers and sold in more than 140 countries. This shows a big success on the part of the company.
